It’s only in the fullness of time that we’ll know where Scottie Scheffler ranks amongst the greatest players ever to pick up a golf club.
The likelihood is that he will be up there with the likes of Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer amongst the sport’s all-time legends, and when he is Scheffler will no doubt look back on 2024 as a key year in his ascendance.
Between March and September, he won six PGA TOUR events, an Olympic medal, and the season-ending TOUR Championship, which ultimately meant that he was crowned FedEx Cup champion too.
All in all, it’s been a successful six-month span for the adopted Texan…
Major Glory
There’s an air of certainty whenever Scheffler tees it up in a PGA TOUR event; that feeling that he’s going to win any tournament that he enters.
But the 28-year-old hasn’t quite been as imperious in the majors. Yes, he’s won The Masters twice, but has so far failed to break his duck in the U.S. Open, PGA Championship, and British Open.
That will be on the minds of bettors placing their golf futures bets ahead of the 2025 season. The best betting apps Canada offer odds for the four majors well in advance of the tournaments getting underway, so you wonder how Scheffler’s relative struggles on the big stage will affect the lines.
These apps also allow bettors to wager ‘in play’ too with a few taps of their screen, so maybe some will hold back from betting on Scheffler before the start; instead banking on him to deliver a famous comeback victory from off the pace, as he did so memorably at the Olympic Games in Paris in the summer.
The Texan – he was born in New Jersey but moved to the Lone Star State with his family at a young age – has posted top-ten finishes in all four of the majors, but he’ll be looking to get a first win on the board in either the U.S. Open or PGA Championship in particular in 2025.
The former will be played at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania, which over the years has proven to be a devilish test of golf, with some of the toughest conditions in the tournament’s illustrious history.
There’s a feeling that only those with the most reliable tee-to-green games can thrive amid such a challenge, so Scheffler – who has ranked amongst the world’s best in that category for the past few years – will be hoping that he can break his U.S. Open duck – at the very least – in 2025.
A Year to Remember
Scheffler has not only won six PGA TOUR titles in 2024; he’s clinched some of the biggest trophies outside of the majors.
The PLAYERS Championship is sometimes referred to as the ‘fifth major’, such is the esteem that the tournament and its host venue, TPC Sawgrass, are held in.
The 28-year-old launched one of his famous comeback victories back in March, posting a final round of -8 to leapfrog his way up the leaderboard to top spot – he’d started the day five shots behind the 54-hole leader, Xander Schauffele. It was Scheffler’s second consecutive triumph in the PLAYERS.
The Texan also won four of the PGA TOUR’s Signature Events – so-called because of their invitational status and larger prize funds, while outlasting the field to win his second Green Jacket at The Masters; the famous event that all golfers want to win.
Those successes gave Scheffler a head start at the TOUR Championship, an event that begins with a staggered leaderboard to reflect each players’ efforts that season.
With a two-shot cushion over Schauffele, and a wider gap to the rest of the field, it was always going to take something special to reel in Scheffler, and the champion once again showed his ability to lead from the front to confirm the win; sealing not only the TOUR Championship itself but also the season-long FedEx Cup.
There’s not much left in golf for Scheffler to win… but you can bet your bottom dollar he’ll be giving it everything to add more majors to his collection in 2025.
